How Much Does It Cost to Self-Publish a Book?

By Stephanie Nikolopoulos

Self-publishing a book can help you earn passive income for years to come and potentially scale your career by positioning you as a thought leader in your industry. To create a high-quality book on your own, it’s important to treat it as an investment.

Let’s break down self-publishing costs, why they can vary so greatly, and tips for minimizing costs.

How Much Does It Cost to Self-Publish a Book?

The costs that an author incurs to self-publish a book can vary widely, but the two main factors driving the dollars invested are:

  1. Editing

  2. Marketing

Depending on the level of these services needed for a book, costs might range from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars. A good rule of thumb is to budget about $5,000 for self-publishing costs, assuming editing and marketing services are required.

On the low end, you could spend under $100 upfront if your only costs are an ISBN and barcode; on the high end, your self-publishing costs could add up to more than $45,000 if you invest in such steps as several rounds of professional editing, licensing an image for your book cover, setting up your author website, and printing copies to sell at your reading.

Experts say:

  • “Depending on how high-quality and how marketable you want the final product to be, self-publishing a book can cost between $100 and $5,000.” — Kindlepreneur

  • “The majority of authors spent between $1,000 – $6,000 on their books, with the $1,000 – $3,000 bracket accounting for 28% of the overall responses.” — NetGalley

  • “[T]he cost of self-publishing a book varies greatly, ranging from under $1,000 to over $5,600.” — Blurb

  • “A realistic budget for a complete self-publishing project should be at least $2000-5000 to properly prepare, publish, print, and promote a single book.” — Woodbridge Publishers

  • “Self-publishing can cost between $2,940 and $5,660, while authors using traditional publishing generally face no direct publication fees, though marketing can represent a substantial cost.” — Reedsy

  • “[Y]ou’ll need to budget at least $5,000 for your self-publishing.” — Lulu

Everything from whether your book contains an index to if you’re publishing both a print and an ebook edition can significantly impact the cost of self-publishing a book. Below, we breakdown self-publishing cost variables:

  • Research and writing

  • Editing

  • Design

  • Publishing essentials

  • Production and printing

  • Distribution

  • Marketing

Research & Writing

In addition to being an investment in time that takes you away from other paying opportunities, drafting your book can incur costs. This is particularly true if your book requires research.

Consider these potential costs of research and writing:

  • Photocopies of research materials

  • Books purchased for research

  • Travel to interview subjects

  • Interview tools (recording devices/apps, transcription tools, etc.)

  • Writing tools (software like Scrivener, Evernote, and Grammarly)

Pro tip: Use your local library for free resources like books, computer access, and a quiet space to write.

Cost: $0 – $1,000+

Editing

Beta Readers

You’ll likely craft multiple drafts of your book on your own. After you’ve polished your draft, you may share it with beta readers. These are typically unpaid test readers in your community — family, friends, and fellow writers from a writing workshop — but you may treat them to a meal over which you discuss feedback, gift them a copy of the finished book, or thank them with a small gift.

Pro tip: Consider exchanging manuscripts with a fellow writer you trust. This could help you get expert feedback and save on any thank you gift you may otherwise give to a beta reader.

Cost: $0 – $50+

Developmental Editing

After you’ve taken in feedback from beta readers and revised your manuscript, you may want to hire a professional developmental editor. A developmental editor will review for content, story structure, and clarity, with an eye toward issues like plot holes, character development, and pacing.

Cost*: $2,100 – $8,400+, per the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA).

Line Editing

Once you have revised your manuscript to address structural issues, you may bring in a line editor who will review for style and consistency. While a developmental edit looks at the big picture, the line edit looks at the sentence level, reviewing for such issues as word choice, point of view changes, and sentence structure.

Cost*: $1,750 – $7,560+, per the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA).

Copyediting

Copyediting reviews for spelling, punctuation, and grammar. During this stage, the copyeditor will ensure the manuscript conforms to style guides such as The Chicago Manual of Style if it’s a novel or APA if it’s an academic book.

Cost*: $1,400 – $16,800+, per the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA).

Proofreading

The proofreader performs the final quality control check for catching any outstanding issues that weren’t caught in earlier edits or that were introduced during revisions.

Cost*: $840 – $6,000+, per the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA).

Indexing

If you are self-publishing a nonfiction book, you may likely include an index in addition to a table of contents.

Cost**: $50 – $2,000+, per Kindlepreneur.

Make the Most of Your Budget

Clearly, these editing services can add up. Many self-published authors may choose to save on cost by combining feedback from beta users with one “general” edit from a professional. It all depends on the author’s particular budget and goals for their book.

Design

Interior Design

A book designer formats the book layout, including typography, illustrations, and overall page design. This includes following technical requirements for publishing.

If you are self-publishing an ebook, you may also negotiate rates for jump links in the table of contents, footnotes or endnotes, index, glossaries, and appendices. You can also discuss book design rates for creating an enhanced ebook that includes audio, video, and other bonus material.

Keep in mind that if you’re publishing in both a paperback and ebook format, you may need two separate design files.

Cost***: $263 – $2,000+, per the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA).

Cover Design

A book designer develops the book cover, including the front, back, and spine. In addition to concept development and design, they are responsible for adhering to resolution, color modes, and file formats required for publishing.

If you’re publishing in multiple formats like a paperback, ebook, and audiobook, you will likely need separate cover files to match required dimensions.

Cost***: $50 – $200+, per the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA).

Publishing Essentials

Licensing and Copyright

If the book includes any copyrighted material, you will need to license it, which could incur a fee. Copyrighted works can encompass, but are not limited to, photographs, illustrations, quotes from other books, and song lyrics.

If you are publishing in multiple formats, you may need to purchase licenses for each format in which you use the intellectual property.

Pro tip: Licensing works can sometimes be prohibitively expensive. As a workaround, you can reference the song title, poem title, or book title without quoting directly from it. To save on imagery costs consider using fair use and public domain images.

Cost^: Permission not granted – one-time fee per format or royalties

ISBN

To sell your self-published book on major online platforms such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble, your local bookstores, or the public library, you’ll need an International Standard Book Number (ISBN).

If you are printing in multiple formats, you will need a distinct ISBN for each format.

Cost: $29 – $129+, per ISBN US.

Barcode

To sell physical copies of your book, even online, you’ll need a barcode.

Cost $25 – $135+, per Simply Barcodes.

QR Code

Adding a QR code to your book can help you boost reader engagement through interactive content, facilitate your marketing strategy, and improve your data analytics.

Pro tip: When you use a Quilltips QR code, in addition to using it to redirect readers to your newsletter sign-up and social media, you can set up a virtual tip jar to receive monetary tips and messages from your readers, turning your book into a live connection to your fanbase.

Production & Printing

Production costs vary greatly depending on format.

Print Book Self-Publishing Costs

When self-publishing a print book through a print-on-demand (POD) service, production fees are typically included in the printing costs. This means you likely won’t face extra production charges beyond those from preparing your design files.

However, printing costs can be impacted by such production options as:

  • Book format (hard cover, paperback, mass market paperback, etc.)

  • Printer or self-publishing service company

  • Paper stock

  • Book dimensions

  • Page count

  • Black-and-white printing vs. four-color printing

  • Bulk printing vs. POD

Pro tip: When you use a print-on-demand book service, printing and shipping costs are incurred only when a customer purchases your book, thus eliminating those upfront costs for you. However, be sure to order a proof copy before you begin selling the book to ensure print quality, and then purchase any print copies you need in bulk well in advance of when you need them to save on costs.

Cost: $2.50 – $10+ per print book, per Woodbridge Publishers.

EBook Self-Publishing Costs

A traditional ebook will likely not require additional production costs outside of preparing the design file mentioned above. An enhanced ebook may necessitate additional costs for licensing, design stage, and web hosting.

Cost: $0 – $263+, per the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA).

Audiobook Self-Publishing Costs

If you create an audiobook, cost considerations include renting a sound studio and hiring a professional sound engineer, narrator, and producer.

Cost: $2,500 – $3,750 for a five-hour audiobook, per Scribe Media.

Distribution

Usually there is not a cost to list your ebook or POD book on a self-publishing platform. Instead, the service takes a percentage of each sale. If you use this type of service, which most self-published authors do, distribution costs typically are subtracted from sales through the service.

With POD services, customers will pay for shipping. However, if you are shipping print books yourself, you will need to consider the cost of printing, packaging, and shipping. Even if you intend the majority of your sales to come through POD sales, consider the cost of any shipping you do yourself to reviewers and for contest giveaways.

Cost: $0 – 30%, per Woodbridge Publishers.

Marketing

Up to 1 million new books are published each year, so it’s not enough to upload your self-published book to a popular online bookstore. You need to market the book — and yourself — or hire a professional book marketer to strategize and implement book marketing campaigns.

Even small investments in book marketing can add up, such as purchasing a domain name and setting up your author website, printing promotional postcards, or using an email marketing platform to send a newsletter to readers.

Companies such as Amazon, Meta (Facebook and Instagram), and Reddit offer authors the ability to run paid search campaigns to market their books. These campaigns use a “cost-per-click” model, which means that you only pay when someone clicks on your ad. Authors can set a daily budget for spending.

Pro tip: Free ways to market your book include content creation on social media platforms like Goodreads, TikTok, and Instagram, participating in a blog tour, and creating an ARC reader program to generate reviews.

Cost: $60 – $500+, per Reedsy.

  • An attorney that can advise on licensing and freelance contract agreements

  • Professional author photos

  • Trips to writing residencies

  • Paid advertising

  • A book trailer
