Bobbie Lamont and Miller Hoffman enter each other’s lives at a moment when both are still figuring out who they are and what they want from the future. What develops between them is intense, complicated, and deeply meaningful—but like so many relationships from our younger years, love is only part of the story.
I wanted The Distance Between to explore that period of life when everything feels possible and permanent at the same time. We fall in love before we fully understand ourselves. We make promises without knowing where life will take us. And sometimes we meet the right person at a time when neither of us is ready for what that relationship requires.
For readers familiar with Bobbie and Miller elsewhere in the Black Springs Universe, you already know that these thirty-one days will follow them for years. This novel is a chance to see why. Their story does not matter because it is perfect. It matters because it changes them.
The title refers to more than physical distance. It is about the space between what we feel and what we say, between who we are and who we hope to become, and between loving someone and knowing how to build a life with them.
I hope Bobbie and Miller’s summer reminds you of the people, places, and moments that may have lasted only a short time but stayed with you much longer.

Zelmer Wilson (1975- ) was born in Fort Collins, Colorado. At the age of three, he moved with his family to Fort Smith, Arkansas. He would live there until he was eleven. In the summer of 1986, he left Arkansas and moved to Phoenix, Arizona, with his father and stepmother. During the summer of 1990, while visiting his mother and two sisters in Birmingham, Alabama, he discovered his calling in life to be a writer. His debut novel, In the Middle, is inspired by his own difficult teenage years in Phoenix, Arizona.
